About this trip

Eight days in Baltistan — Deosai National Park at 4,114 m, Sheosar Lake, the Katpana cold desert, Shangrila and Upper Kachura lakes, the restored forts of Shigar and Khaplu, and the Manthal Buddha rock. By air or by the Indus gorge road.

Skardu is where Pakistani mountaineering begins — every K2 expedition passes through it — but you do not need to climb anything to see the best of Baltistan. This eight-day tour covers the whole valley properly: Deosai's high plateau, where brown bears and marmots live above the treeline; the surreal Katpana desert, sand dunes at 2,200 m with snow peaks behind; the restored raja's forts at Shigar and Khaplu, now among the finest heritage hotels in Asia; and the Shangrila and Kachura lakes. We include the Skardu flight option, which cuts a full day of driving each way and is one of the most spectacular commercial approaches anywhere — though it is weather-dependent, and the road alternative is always held in reserve.

Frequently asked questions

Should I fly or drive to Skardu?

Fly if you can — it saves two long driving days and the approach is spectacular. But the flight cancels in poor weather roughly one day in four, so we always hold the road option and build the itinerary so a cancellation costs you comfort, not sightseeing.

Can we see K2 on this tour?

Not from the road — K2 requires a 7-day trek from Askole to Concordia. This tour goes as far as Shigar, the start of that route. Ask us about our K2 Base Camp trek if you want the real thing.

Is Deosai suitable for children and older travellers?

Yes, with care. The whole day is spent in a vehicle with short walks, but 4,114 m affects everyone somewhat. Anyone with a heart or lung condition should check with a doctor first.

How cold does it get?

Skardu in July is pleasant at 25–30°C by day. Deosai rarely exceeds 12°C and can freeze at night. Pack for both.

Can this be combined with Hunza?

Yes — our 12-day Grand North circuit covers Hunza, Khunjerab, Skardu and Deosai in one trip. Ask for a quote.
