About this trip

Six days along the Neelum river through Azad Kashmir — Keran, the Sharda Buddhist ruins, Kel, the chairlift and hike up to Arang Kel, and the optional 4x4 excursion to Ratti Gali Lake at 3,700 m.

The Neelum valley runs 200 km northeast from Muzaffarabad along a river the colour of its name, with the Line of Control on the far bank for much of the way. It is the greenest valley in Pakistan — terraced maize fields, walnut and apple trees, wooden houses with slate roofs — and considerably less visited than Naran or Hunza. The road has improved enormously in recent years but is still narrow and slow in places, which is part of why the valley has kept its character. The highlight is Arang Kel, a village on a shelf above Kel reached by a short chairlift and a steep 40-minute walk, with a meadow view that people describe as the most beautiful place they have been in Pakistan. Ratti Gali Lake, at 3,700 m above Dowarian, is an optional add-on for those with an extra day and a strong stomach for jeep tracks.

Visa requirements

Pakistani nationals need only a CNIC, which is registered at the AJK entry point — we handle the paperwork. Foreign nationals require a No Objection Certificate for the Neelum valley, which takes around three weeks; contact us well ahead.

What to pack

  • Warm layers — the upper valley is cold at night even in summer
  • Waterproof jacket: Kashmir gets more rain than Gilgit-Baltistan
  • Walking shoes with grip for the Arang Kel climb
  • Modest dress; the valley is conservative
  • Cash — there are no working ATMs above Muzaffarabad
  • Original CNIC, checked at several points

Frequently asked questions

How difficult is the walk up to Arang Kel?

The chairlift covers the river crossing; from there it is about 40 minutes of steep uphill on a stone path. Most reasonably fit people manage it with breaks, and ponies are available for around PKR 2,000 each way.

Is it safe near the Line of Control?

Yes. The valley has been quiet and open to tourism for years and receives large numbers of domestic visitors every summer. There are army checkposts along the road and your tour lead handles registration at each.

Should we add Ratti Gali Lake?

If you have the day and do not mind a very rough jeep track, yes — it is one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in Pakistan. It is only accessible from around late June to early September.

How is the road?

Paved and reasonable up to Sharda, then narrow, unpaved and slow to Kel. Journey times are longer than the distances suggest. This is normal for the valley and is part of why it is so unspoilt.

Is there mobile signal?

SCOM and Jazz work patchily up to Sharda and barely at all at Kel. Plan to be largely offline for two days.
