About this trip

Five days in the Kaghan valley — Shogran and Siri Paye meadows, Lake Saif-ul-Malook, Lulusar Lake, Babusar Top at 4,173 m and the Kunhar river throughout. The best short northern trip from Islamabad or Lahore.

If you have a long weekend rather than a week, this is the trip. The Kaghan valley starts four hours from Islamabad and climbs from pine forest to alpine meadow to the 4,173 m Babusar pass in a single day. It is the most family-friendly of our northern tours: short driving legs, hotels with proper heating and hot water, and a pace that suits children and grandparents. Saif-ul-Malook is the headline, but the Siri Paye meadow above Shogran is the one people talk about afterwards — a green plateau at 3,200 m with the whole Kaghan range around it. Weekly Thursday departures from Islamabad and Lahore, plus private departures on any date.

  • Lake Saif-ul-Malook at 3,224 m

Frequently asked questions

When does Saif-ul-Malook open?

The jeep track normally clears around mid to late May and stays open until the first heavy October snow. In early May the lake is often still frozen, which is beautiful in its own right but not what most people expect.

Is Babusar Top always open?

It usually opens in late June and closes with the first snow, often in October. Before then, the tour runs to Lulusar Lake instead, which is still a spectacular day.

Can we do this trip from Lahore?

Yes — departures leave Lahore the previous evening and join the Kaghan route at Mansehra, adding around PKR 6,000 per person.

Is it suitable for young children?

It is our most family-friendly northern tour. The driving legs are short and the jeep sections are the highlight for most children. Under-12s pay 55% of the adult fare.

How busy does Naran get?

Very, in July and August — hotels sell out and the bazaar is packed. That is exactly why we book rooms months ahead. If you want quiet, go in June or September.
