About this trip

Eleven days from Rome through the Tuscan hill towns to the Amalfi Coast — a Chianti wine estate, a Florence cooking class, Pompeii, Capri by boat and three nights above the cliffs of Sorrento, with round-trip airfare from the USA.

This is the Italy trip for travellers who have either been to Rome already or would rather spend their time eating, driving and looking at water than queueing at museums. It still covers the essentials — the Colosseum, the Vatican, Florence's Duomo — but the heart of it is the countryside: a working Chianti estate for lunch, the medieval Palio square in Siena, a hands-on pasta class in Florence, then the descent to the Amalfi Coast for boat days to Capri and Positano and a morning in Pompeii. Hotels are chosen for character rather than chain consistency: a Tuscan villa, a Sorrento clifftop with sea views, a central Rome palazzo. Groups are small, capped at sixteen, because the Amalfi road cannot take a full-size coach.

Visas and practical information

Visa requirements

US passport holders need no visa for Italy. From 2026 an ETIAS authorization (about $22, valid three years) is required and takes minutes online. We send you the official government link — never pay a third-party site.

Allow around 7 days for processing — book with that in mind.

What to pack

  • Motion-sickness tablets for the Amalfi Drive if you are prone to it
  • Swimwear — Sorrento, Capri and Positano all have swimming
  • Shoulders and knees covered for the Vatican and Amalfi cathedral
  • Shoes with grip: Capri, Positano and Ravello are all steps
  • A light jacket for boat days, which are breezy even in July

Frequently asked questions

Is the Blue Grotto guaranteed?

No — it closes whenever the swell is too high, which happens perhaps one day in five. When it does, the island boat circuit and the extra time in Anacapri run instead, and the grotto's separate entry fee is not charged.

Why is the group capped at 16?

The Amalfi Drive is legally closed to full-size coaches in summer. Sixteen guests fit a minibus that can actually make the hairpins and stop at the viewpoints, which is the whole point of the day.

Can we extend on the Amalfi Coast?

Yes, and many guests do. Extra nights in Sorrento or Positano cost from $180 per room per night, and we simply move your return flight.

How much walking is on this tour?

More vertical than horizontal. Positano, Capri and the hill towns are all steps and slopes. If stairs are difficult, tell us — we can arrange alternatives on those days.

Do you accommodate dietary requirements?

Yes, including vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and halal. Tell us at booking so the cooking class and estate dinners are planned around it.
