About this trip

Five days in the Swat valley — Malam Jabba's chairlift and ski slopes, the Ushu forest and Mahodand Lake above Kalam, the Jehanabad Buddha rock carving and the Butkara stupa, on the fast new Swat Expressway from Islamabad.

Swat is the closest of the great northern valleys to Islamabad, and since the expressway opened it is under four hours away. It is also the greenest: alpine forest, a wide clear river, and the highest concentration of Gandharan Buddhist sites anywhere in Pakistan. This tour balances the two — Kalam and Mahodand Lake for the mountains, Malam Jabba for the chairlift and the views, and the Buddha rock carving and Butkara stupa for the history. It works year-round in a way most northern tours do not: green and cool in summer, snow-covered and skiable in winter. The pace is gentle and the driving legs are short, which makes it one of our best options for families with young children or older parents.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Mahodand road passable in a car?

No. The Kalam–Mahodand track needs a 4x4 jeep, which is included in the package. The jeep ride through the Ushu forest is genuinely one of the highlights.

Can we ski at Malam Jabba?

Yes, from roughly late December to early March, conditions permitting. Equipment hire and lift passes are arranged locally and are not included in the package price.

How does Swat compare with Naran or Hunza?

Swat is greener, closer, wetter and cheaper. Hunza is drier, higher and more dramatic. Naran sits between the two. For a first northern trip with young children, Swat is the easiest.

Is Swat safe now?

Yes. Swat has been peaceful for well over a decade and receives very large numbers of domestic tourists every summer. We use local guides and vetted hotels throughout.

Can we visit in winter?

Yes — this is one of the few northern tours that runs all year. The Mahodand track closes with snow from around November to April, and is replaced by Malam Jabba snow days and the lower valley sites.
